New Clan MacDowall book published in June 2009

The MacDowalls
A new book by Fergus D. H. Macdowall Editor-in-Chief and his team of talented assistants was published in June 2009 by the Clan MacDougall Society. This well written book of 182 pages displays the new Clan MacDowall Tartan pattern on its cover.  The MacDowalls gives an overview history of the past 900 years of glories, tragedies, and accomplishments of the MacDowall kindred from their beginnings in Scotland and Ireland and after their emigrations. The characters range from kings, barons and builders, to artists, generals, and farmers, to settlers, homemakers and teachers. It tells of their ancient history in Galloway, castles and abbeys and other structures relating to them, the Macdougalls of Makerstoun cadet, emigration and settlement in North America, and of families in the Netherlands, Sweden and Russia.

The MacDowall kindred includes many family spelling variations of the surname including McDowell, MacDowel, Macdowal, MacDowyl, McDuyl, Macdoual, MacDool, McDoll, and Macdougall (the original ancient name of the MacDowalls which derived from the name Duegald their founder in Galloway).  Other names within the MacDowalls include Coyle, Coles, Dole, Dowall, Dugal, Dugle, Duwall, Duvall, M’Gowall, and Kyle.  Several additional spellings of the name are identified in the book’s listing of Names and Spellings.
Fergus D. H. Macdowall Chief of the Name has directed that all profits from the sale of this book are to be held in Trust by the Clan MacDougall Society of North America to be used for promoting the heritage of the MacDowall kindred.

I contributed to the writing of this book and during all my research I did not find any other book that provides so much information about the MacDowalls and their kindred families. Although no single book can do justice to such a long and varied history this book is an excellent start. This book with its beautiful blue tartan on its cover would also make a lovely gift.
